H1. Creative use of online
8 entries
Judges: John Moore is assistant managing editor for new media and technology at the Ventura County Star, which was honored for general excellence in the Newspaper Association of America’s Digital Edge Awards
First place
Azcentral.com: Lisa DeForest, Eva Pederson and azcentral staff:
“Relocation guide: www.azcentral.com/relocationguide04;
Oddball Arizona: www.azcentral.com/travel/arizona/odballaz/oddballindex.html; and
Arizona Culture and History: www.azcentral.com/culturesaz”
“Very strong entry. The relocation guide has all the information (and more) that you would want and presents it clearly, easily and in multiple formats. Oddball Arizona is a good packaging of a print package. Not much enchancement, but fun to have online with an opportunity to easily go where they lead.
The strength of this entry is the Arizona Culture and History. What a
massive project. Yet it is easy to navigate through the wealth of
information. We can read about the cultural background of the state, hear about it and see it. It fully utilizes the multimedia aspects of the web to bring these stories alive. It's a superb effort.”
Second place
AzStarNet.com: Kerry Dinsore, Sean Kasun, Andrew Satter, Michael Marizco, Kelly Presnell, Chiara Bautista, Enric Volante:
“Smuggling children: www.azstarnet.com/subsections/includes/border/smuggling.html;
Leaking fuel: www.azstarnet.com/sn/leakingtanks; and Gas pumps: www.azstarnet.com/sn/gaspump”
“The Leaking Fuel and Gas Pumps packages were good usages of interactive databases, allowing me to hone in on the information I wanted ... how does it affect me? The Smuggling Children was a remarkable package where multimedia was used to truly enhance an already strong print story. Good use of reporter/photographer audio to explain how they got the story in the slide shows (we don't do enough of that). “
Thrd place
AzCentral.com: Mark Hiland, Angel Rodriquez, Ryan Eilders, Eva Pederson, Carrie Wheeler, Alyson Hurt: “tillman.azcentral.com, cactus.azcentral.com and olympics.azcentral.com
“All three entries were massive. Which was a slight drawback. As an online reader, I could easily see that it had all the multimedia elements, but I almost didn't know where to start. They were packaged in ‘like bites’ but even that was daunting. Each separately was an impressive amassing of the elements of the stories. It would keep us busy for hours to go through each site.”
