First runner-up

Betsy Rice

Maricopa Monitor

Betsy Rice, 26, is editor of the Maricopa Monitor, Northwest Pinal County’s only weekly newspaper. She has covered numerous complex issues since the incorporation of Maricopa as Arizona’s 88th city in October 2003.

She also is editor of Pinal Ways Magazine. Both publications are owned by Casa Grande Valley Newspapers Inc.

In Sterling’s view: “Betsy strikes me a fearless editor, not afraid to back up her stories with personal comments on the editorial page. That way she can run the stories straight, without bias, and then turn it up a notch in her ‘From the Editor’ column. Covered many diverse topics and seems to have covered them well.”

Rice, an Arizona native, is a magna cum laude graduate of the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University and previously worked for Ahwatukee Monthly Magazine and College Times.
