Talented students pocket Press Club cash

One of the most rewarding parts of being involved with the Arizona Press Club is selecting recipients of the club's annual college scholarships. With our help, talented and deserving students can continue to pursue careers in journalism -- so they can someday be our bosses. The decisions are never easy, but we narrowed the entries to four students who will receive a nice check to help with their education. The winners are:

JUNE WILHITE, Arizona State University, $1,000
Wilhite is a senior and the assistant city editor at the campus newspaper, State Press. She also is an intern with The Arizona Republic. Her work, both at the State Press and at the Republic, was first rate. Wilhite was the unanimous choice for the top award.

JOSHUA WEISBERG, Northern Arizona University, $750
Weisberg is majoring in both journalism and social science and is the assistant photo editor of the campus newspaper, The Lumberjack. He also is a freelance photographer for Phoenix bureau of the Associated Press. Peter Schwepker, a highly-decorated photographer with The Arizona Republic, recommended Weisberg for an award: "Joshua has an incredible future. I suspect he will be one of the very best photojournalists in Arizona down the line. His is a name to remember."

JODIE LAU, Arizona State University, $500
Lau is a copy editor and general assignment reporter at the State Press and an anchor on an AM radio station. As a reporter she showed the ability to handle a range of topics from abortion and smoking clinics to efforts to help victims of the Taiwanese earthquakes.

ANDREW LONG, Mesa Community College, $250
Long is a one-man show at the MCC Legend: editor-in-chief, writer, cartoonist, designer and photographer. What a slacker! He also works as a night metro clerk at the East Valley Tribune.

Congratulations to the winners, and to all who entered the contest!
