SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND MEDICINE REPORTING
Judged by Ron Campbell, The Orange County Register
First Place
Tony Ortega, Phoenix New Times, "Starship Stupors"
"Many reporters want to have it both ways with stories about UFOs - to milk believers' stories without taking them seriously. The author of this [first place] story took the Phoenix Lights mystery very seriously, interviewing the participants and weighing their claims closely. The result is at once hilarious and sober-minded. The author gave the UFO proponents the courtesy of a fair - and skeptical - hearing. They doubtless wish the author had simply done nothing."
Second Place
Maureen West, The Arizona Republic, "Forever Young"
Third Place
Guy Webster, The Tribune, "Sky Sentry"
