FEATURE HEADLINES
Judged by George Bryson, editor of the Anchorage Daily News Sunday Magazine, 1988 Pulitzer Prize Public Service Medal winner.
First Place
Robert Stieve, Phoenix Magazine, "The Tree Amigos," "Mad Car Disease," "Jeep Thrills"
"'The Tree Amigos' was outstanding, catchy but directly to the point of the story - about three friends who defend trees and love the environment and also like each other. A lot of puns work on two levels, but this worked on three or four."
Second Place
Dewey Webb, Phoenix New Times, "Here's to You, Missing Robinsons," "All Abort!" "Show Me the Mummy!"
"An outstanding job writing consistently, engaging heads for a narrow, confining format. `Show Me the Mummy!' was my favorite."
Third Place
Jeremy Voas, Phoenix New Times, "Mute Point," "I Totally Object," "TB or Not TB"
"`I Totally Object' did a nice job of capturing the tone of teenager-speak in a story about high school mock-trial competition! The hed also worked on the level of examining potentially objectionable practices in the program. `Mute Point' about the unassailable achievements of mime artist Marcel Marceau was simple, but perfect."
Honorable Mention
Bob Satnan, The Tribune,"State of Disgrace"
"'State of Disgrace' was an excellent front page headline on a serious subject. The word play was quite profound."
