SPOT NEWS PHOTOGRAPHY

Judged by Frederic Larson, photographer, San Francisco Chronicle, 1988 Pulitzer Prize finalist, multiple winner of California Press Photographer of the Year award

First Place
Mona Reeder, The Arizona Republic, "Tunnel to Freedom"

"At the right place at the right time gives this photographer a first place award. The question raised was how the photographer was there by the storm drain when they appeared. High marks for the news value and alertness to an often overtold photo story about immigrants....Great light and texture....Composition was exceptionally strong."

Second Place
Brad Armstrong, The Tribune, "Shooting"

"A moment that we don't see enough of is having a police officer comforting a victim on the scene. For a news photograph, the photographer caught a tender moment. Very simple, clean background, technically sound with good light."

Third Place
Rick D'Elia, The Tribune, "Fatal"

"Heads up for the photographer that caught this distraught man leaving the scene of an accident. Although the wheelchair was a hard read, and the victim's name was never identified in the caption, the photographic image stood out from the others because of the impact and emotion."

Honorable Mention
Irwin Daugherty, The Tribune, "Drowning"

"Although the story-line was weak, with the victim never found, the photographer caught Carl Chandler at the moment of total exhaustion. His body language, along with the paramedics, made for perfect composition. Very clean background making the image pop. Every person in the photograph was involved."
