PORTRAIT/PERSONALITY PHOTOGRAPHY
Judged by Allen Berner, photographer, The Seattle Times, with Gary Settle, Steve Ringman, Dean Rutz, Rod Mar, Kevin Clark and Ben Benschneider, all of The Seattle Times
First Place
David Sanders, The Arizona Daily Star, "Lamp"
"The judges were surprised by the lack of spontaneous, journalistic moments in favor of well-lit, controlled images. No one photograph was a consensus `knock your socks off' winner. The judges were divided over `Lamp' and `Bullfighter' with the judging chair casting the decisive vote. `Lamp' is technically the best entry in the category. It is a slick, sophisticated magazine-type image though it does not convey the personality of the subject."
Second Place
Sarah Prall, The Arizona Daily Star, "Champions"
"Many of the judges liked the idea of the underwater portrait of the swimmers better than the execution of the photograph."
Third Place
David Sanders, The Arizona Daily Star, "Bullfighter"
"The `Bullfighter' portrait was either well liked or intensely objected to by the judges. Some wanted it for first while others said it was a `bad, busy, contrived' image. Distracting extraneous reflections hurt the photo."
Honorable Mention
Mona Reeder, The Arizona Republic, "Century of Memories"
"...liked for its straight-ahead journalistic simplicity. Some judges would have liked it done with available light. Others felt the umbrella lighting was far too hot on the left side and a scrim would have helped an otherwise nice portrait."
