PICTURE STORY
Judged by John Davidson, Associate Managing Editor of Visuals, The Dallas Morning News, with Paula Nelson and Rick Choate, also from The Dallas Morning News
First Place
Michael Chow, The Arizona Republic, "Deadly Sunlight"
"Strong, concise picture story told with emotion and clean and graphic photography. Nicely edited. Judges agreed that the image of the coat-covered boy provides the same information as the blanket-covered photo and we like the blanket better. Makes it even a tighter, stronger edit."
Second Place
Sarah Prall, The Arizona Daily Star, "Bee Well"
"Nicely done story that has balanced both the struggle and the happier moments of Krista's life. Wonderful ending image of her sisters showering her with kisses. The image of the bee stings on Krista's back elicited a reaction from the judges (as well as the beginning photo of Krista before the affliction.) Good detail. Well done."
Third Place
Paul O'Neill, The Tribune, "The Life of a Street Kid"
"A difficult subject done quite well. It would be fascinating to continue covering Kidd as she struggles on the street. Judges did not understand the inclusion of the photo of the man burning his hair. Although it is relevant to street life, we felt it was not relevant to the story....Some of the photography is approaching clutter. Need to concentrate on simple, graphic images as well as capturing emotion."
Honorable Mention
Mark Henle, The Arizona Republic, "Dividing Line"
