PHOTO ILLUSTRATION
Judged by Joey Ivansco, photographer, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, with Jean Shifrin and Phil Skinner, also of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
First Place
Todd Lillard, Ahwatukee Foothills News, "Guns"
"We liked the simplicity of the illustration--the technical aspect of the photo is executed well--the shallow depth of field is critical so that it does not compete with the yearbook photos. The overall image may have been better if the yearbook photos were black & white instead of color....But given the situation and deadline considerations--very nice!!"
Second Place
Michael Chow, The Arizona Republic, "Peeling Away Time"
"We liked the way the photographer incorporated both black & white and color into the photo--it's very effective. For a photo that could have been difficult to explain--this is a quick read."
Third Place
Sergey Shayevich, The Arizona Daily Star, "Onions"
"Good graphic design and concept--it's very elegant! It took the judges a few moments to figure out that the photo incorporates different onions--the effect of a `blooming onion' is quite nice!!"
Honorable Mention
Sarah Prall, The Arizona Daily Star, "Awful Earful"
"The flow of the `noise' is interesting--giving the viewer a sense of what noise looks like can be a challenge--but we felt the photog did a good job."
