Arizona Press Club Brick Wall award

The Annual First Amendment Disservice Award

 "The Brick Wall Award"

Posted: Feb. 18, 2008

Greetings, members of the Arizona Press Club and fellow journalists:

We've all been there. We've gnashed our teeth after government officials kicked us out of executive sessions that don't quite fit the definition. We've cursed under our breath while bureaucrats smirkingly explained that maybe *someday* they'll get us the public records we demanded six months ago.

Now it's time to expose them.

Each year, the Arizona Press Club's Brick Wall Award calls attention to government agencies' egregious efforts to thwart the public's right to know, whether that's ignoring public records requests or violating open meetings laws. Last year's "winner" was the city of Marana. The year before that, we "honored" the city of Williams and Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

We're looking for the worst examples of bad behavior from 2007. Send your horror story to brickwall@azpressclub.org and include links to any stories that would tell us more. We'll consider any nomination received by March 7.

Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the awards banquet May 10 at the Heard Museum! More details on that later.
