2010 Scholarship
Applications due by April 5, 2010
— deadline extended to April 12!
Dear students, professors and advisors,
The Arizona Press Club is a nonprofit organization made up of professional journalists from publications across Arizona. Our goal is to promote excellence in the field through an annual contest, training seminars and networking events.
The Arizona Press Club also awards scholarships of up to $1,000 each to student reporters, photographers and designers studying journalism.
Applications may be submitted by email or U.S. Postal
Service, but must be received by April 5, 2010 —
deadline extended to April 12! Winners will be
announced by the end of April. Each winner and a guest are invited to the Press
Club’s annual awards party, scheduled for May 15 at the Arizona State University
Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications in Phoenix.
Applicants can be Arizona high school students entering an Arizona college by fall 2010, or students currently enrolled in an Arizona two-year or four-year college. Recipients are chosen primarily based on the quality of their work, but financial need and other factors are considered.
In addition to writing/reporting and photography, Press Club created a scholarship for design in 2005. Design work could include one, or a combination of, the following items: graphics, illustrations, editorial cartoons or the layout design of a newspaper/magazine/media Web site cover, page or package. Design entries may be submitted as a working Web link on a media site (for Web-based design) or either tearsheets or PDFs of printed newspaper or magazine pages.
Students interested in applying for a scholarship should send:
• A one-page application letter briefly explaining their educational level, interests and current status.
• A one-page letter of recommendation from a professor, advisor or an editor/writer.
• All applications should include five examples of the journalist’s recent published work, which may include current Web links, PDFs, tearsheets or photocopies from magazines or newspapers. It may also include print-outs from a media Web site. The only exception: applicants in the photography category should include five photos taken by the student, at least three of which have been published in a newspaper, magazine or media Web site. Current Web links showing the published photos are acceptable.
Applications must be
received by April 5, 2010 —
deadline extended to April 12!
