Posted May 13, 2008: North Central News Inc., publisher of three community monthly newspapers, seeks a part-time to full-time editorial associate for its Scottsdale and Tempe publications. Job duties include developing and writing original stories for each publication as well as assisting with compiling and formatting submitted news. Newspaper or other community publication experience preferred. The job will entail periodic attendance at city council meetings for both communities, so East Valley residency is a plus. While some flexibility will be allowed for working from home, some weekly in-office attendance will be required (office is located in Central Phoenix).
Expected hire date is mid-June, with transition to full-time work expected by Aug. 1. Health insurance is provided for employees working 30 hours or more, with approximately 80 percent of premium paid by North Central News Inc. We are looking for a full-time entry-level reporter/photographer/news assistant to handle a variety of tasks for our daily online news Web site at www.85239.com and bi-monthly four-process-color print magazine at www.85239themagazine.com.
Skills required include extensive knowledge of AP Style, the ability to write and rewrite quickly and accurately on deadline for both print and online news sources, general photography skills including digital photography and photo editing in Photoshop, an eye for news with the ability to moderate online forum discussions with both the intent to serve as a gatekeeper and a liaison between the community and newsroom culling possible story ideas. Must be personable, not too shy to ask the tough questions and sharp enough to know what questions to ask. Excellent Internet research skills are a plus. Must have a solid understanding of media law and a strong sense of journalistic ethics.
